The beginning of the school year is all about establishing routines. Every day, we focus on a different routine or procedure and talk about the correct way to go about it. Taking digital photos of what to do in each area of the classroom serves as a great reminder for this! I like to make signs using photos of the kids and I post them all over the place (inside the door showing check-in routines, outside the bathroom, and at every literacy work station.)
We made this sign and it now hangs in the sink area.
Get to know your students and set goals for them and with them as quickly as possible. No one wants to think about assessment on the first day of school, but the sooner you have a snapshot of each child, the sooner you can set the tone that we will be continually learning and growing this school year. Start out with a goal that you know each student can master relatively quickly in order to help them feel successful and proud. This bulletin board will remain the same all year, but the student goals will change regularly. Some ideas for beginning of the year goals: writing my name, learning my lunch number, learning my address, counting to ___, etc."

Don't be afraid to spend time establishing your classroom community! It is so important that students not only understand the expectations for procedures, but also for peacefully resolving conflicts and interacting with one another. You are going to be a family for the next year, so learn all you can about each other, find common ground, and form those bonds!
Here, we are singing the "Looking Through my Window" song from Dr. Jean's Back to School Songs. We spend time making each student feel like a valued part of our class each day!
